- 1967 – 1970 -- Burger King, Budget Director. Developed first ever cost-control system for fast-food restaurants.
- 1970-1972 -- General Mills, Controller. Worked with one of their Fast-food restaurant divisions, initiated controls and systems for better financial performance analysis. A controller is a financial position for a large company.
- 1972 – 1977 – Kentucky Fried Chicken, Vice President of Real Estate and Construction (NOT Concept Development, as stated in the BNet article.) Turned a $35 million loss reserve into a profit. Strong experience in fast food business.
- 1977 – 1986 – Chi-Chi’s, Inc. President/CEO and then Chairman/CEO. AOL Hometown page is good source for Chi-Chi’s information. Getting involved in Chi-Chi’s when there were no full service Mexican restaurants, per se. Major accomplishment was in building that category, that didn’t exist earlier, into one of the biggest food categories in the restaurant industry. Was virtually unknown beforehand. Turned that into a $700 million company with 225 restaurants throughout North American and Europe, became the 15th largest restaurant chain in the country. He was CEO/Chairman during this time. When he left, it was the 37th largest company in the restaurant business. He took it from zero to the 37th largest company in the restaurant business. Also had the 27th largest value of any market company of that time. It had the 12th highest margins of any company of that time. 15th in sales per unit of any company in the country. Did all that in less than 10 years, in a farily new and unexploited segement of the restaurant business. It was for a time considered one of the fasest growing rest. biz int eh company. Shearson Lehman, an investment banking firm, named Chi-Chi's 1 of the 10 best retail companies in 1985. Shelly was named by the Wall Street Transcript Restaurant CEO of the year in 1983. (Prior to Chi-Chi’s there was never any full service restaurant concepts that was able to franchise. They were the first company to do that successfully. Other restaurants followed suit from Chi-Chi’s success. They were the innovator in that area.)

- 1986 - 2008 – Semi-Retirement. Involved in a number of projects. Most notable assignment, asked to consult for an 85-year old 3rd generation, one-unit pizza restaurant approached by a venture capital group about expanding. Structured financial terms so that family got a significant equity position with no financial risk, found management, negotiated first location, consulted with company on the layout, design, systems, controls, and marketing for the first restaurant. It became very successful, and he helped them open the 2nd restaurant, and they’re now opening their 3rd and 4th. Pizza concept has been featured in national television programs and newspapers (Frank Pepe Pizza out of New Haven – but don’t list company). Its listed as one of the 10 best in the country by Forbes Traveler.
- 80 year old theatre company in Connecticut that had a restaurant having problems, and you were called in to consult with them. He reccomended restructuring, concept upgrade and new management.

There were a lot of them, but he can’t recall specifically. As chairman of a public company, he had a lot of involvement with Wall street, brokerage firms, and restaurant analysts of those firms that would quote him in their reports, including Nation’s Restaurants’ News – the industry publication. Other monthly magazines he was interviewed and quoted in.

Hobbies
Former competitive tennis player and high school tennis coach. Coached son’s tennis team to 2 state championships. He played competitively, was ranked in Kentucky.
